Institution for tapestry making Atelier 61, founded in 1961. on the initiative of a painter and tapestry artist Boško Petrovic, and People Council of Novi Sad, is an institution of distinguished social significance. The Atelier 61 is Yugolsav unique art centre of tapestry and one of the fewest in the world, where a tapestry is made, cherished, sistematically kept and popularized. From its foundation to nowdays skillful weavers have made over 800 tapestry works in the workshop of this studio, with more than 150 authors of various artistic interests, deteminations and poetical sense. The tapestry making in the studio is realised by the annual competition, by the invitation of the distinguished artist, by the propositions of the participants of the Tapestry colony Boško Petrovic, by producing the tapestry of Atelier 61`s annual reward winner, as well as by competition for the student tapestry.
The Atelier 61 has rich and valuable Collection of tapestries of over 200 works, produced and collested from 1961. to these days. The Collection is increased every year by the number of tapestries made in the studio`s workshop. From the same begining, since l962. the Atelier 61 has been cherishing an active axibited activity in the country as well as in the world. The Atelier 61 tapestries are presented in all bigger cities around Europe, Asia, North and South America, and in the most cities in our country. In order to enoble the ambients and enteriors, the tapestries of this studio are displayed in the public places, schools, institutions... of Novi Sad. The unique tapestry gallery Boško Petrovic was opened on the Petrovaradin fortress in January 1999. According to its programme of tapestry exibitions during the whole year, the works from Atelier 61. Tapestry Collection, as well as the other various thematic and programme wholes are presented in this gallery.
By cherishing the old craft - weaving, the Atelier 61 founded a Weaving school on horizontal and vertical looms in 1997. The school is held in the rooms of this studio during the whole year. In 1998. on the initiative of the Atelier 61 an idea of organization of the first and unique Colony for tapestry artists named Boško Petrovic was realised. The activity of this colony has a tendency to assemble, cooperate and exchange experiences in the art of tapestry, to popularize this artistic discipline, as well as to enrich the Tapestry collection with new and original works, various in its ideas and poetic sense. Owing to its specific tapestry medium, the Colony for tapestry artists is listed among the firs seven colonies in our country.
A Triannual Tapestry Exibition in Novi Sad was established in 2001. by the Atelier 61. The exibition is an occasion to make a real review of the events in the tapestry art every three years.
The Monograph of the Atelier 61 through the texts of selective authors, numerous tapestry reproductions and large documentary material introduce its readers with the history and significance of this institution, as well as with poetical and esthetic sense of the tapestries from the Collection.
